Winners Announced in Tenth Annual Arkansas Endangered Species Day Art Contest

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Arkansas Field Office partnered with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC), and the ANHC to sponsor the Tenth Annual Arkansas Endangered Species Day (ESD) Art Contest. This year, the contest had over 850 entries from 49 schools and three home schools throughout the state, representing 45 of Arkansas’s threatened, endangered, candidate and federally at-risk species.

The ESD provides students an opportunity to learn about threatened and endangered species in Arkansas and express their knowledge and support of these species through art. Entries were judged by a panel based on concept, composition, color, and expression.

Winners in the kindergarten to second grade category are: Lyela Morgan, Louise Durham Elementary, Mena, first place; Spencer York, Jimmy Brown Elementary, Star City, second place; Kieran Kirk, Jimmy Brown Elementary, Star City, third place; Halia Peterson, Louise Durham Elementary, Mena, Honorable Mention; and Carsyn Haley, Jimmy Brown Elementary, Star City, Honorable Mention. Winners in the third to sixth grade category are: Sydney Jones, Louise Durham Elementary, Mena, first place; Bhuvi Gopisetty, Bright Field Middle, Batesville, second place; McKenzie Treat, Batesville Junior High, third place; and Heaven McGarrah, Decatur Middle, Honorable Mention. Winners in the seventh to ninth grade category are: Phoebe Lillard, Pottsville Junior High, first place; Lucas Dresner, Cotter Middle, second place; Emma Zellner, Greenbrier Junior High, third place; and Gavin Wilson, Greenbrier Junior High, Honorable Mention. Winners in the 10th to 12th grade are: Abby Lewis, Greenbrier High, first place; Hannah Lawrence, Monticello High, second place; Elise McDuff, Monticello High, third place; and Karigan Skiba, Greenbrier High, Honorable Mention. The overall winner was Mikki Young, Sylvan Hills High, Sherwood.
